WebOct 5, 2024 · I'm maybe wrong think flame cutting is caused by firing a lot of 125 gr .38 spl and .357 mags and maybe out of spec or uneven forcing cone . I have a 686 plus and mostly shoot 130 -158 gr .38 spl and just a few 125 gr ,38 spl +P and .357 Mags. Top strap is a little discolored but cleans off with hoppes9 and bronze brush . WebJun 13, 2010 · Flame cutting happens on nearly all revolvers to some extent, and has been happening to revolvers since mid-1800's. The "gouge" will grow to a certain point then will stop in most cases because the hot high pressure gas has worn it down to a point that the pressures and temps have dissipated by the time it has reached the worn top strap.
