WebIn chemistry, iron(II) refers to the element iron in its +2 oxidation state. In ionic compounds (salts), such an atom may occur as a separate cation (positive ion) denoted by Fe 2+. The adjective ferrous or the prefix ferro- is often used to specify such compounds — as in "ferrous chloride" for iron(II) chloride, FeCl 2. WebTo be absorbed from the intestinal lumen, iron must be in the ferrous state (Fe 2+ ). Inorganic sources of iron are converted to ferrous iron by an enzyme on the luminal (apical) surface of enterocytes. Iron then enters the cell through a transporter, called DMT-1 (divalent metal transporter-1).
