Strict finitism

In the philosophy of mathematics, ultrafinitism (also known as ultraintuitionism, strict formalism, strict finitism, actualism, predicativism, and strong finitism) is a form of finitism and intuitionism. There are various philosophies of mathematics that are called ultrafinitism. A major identifying property common among most of these philosophies is their objections to totality of number theoretic functions like exponentiation over natural numbers. Webstrict finitist critiques, bringing to light independent and objectionable features of the latter, the untenability of strict finitism, if it is untenable, will mean that no-one can be deemed unreasonable who refuses to regard the intuitionist critique as compelling. The situation would not inevitably be that there was doubt about the coherence of

WebStrict finitism, as it were, strives for a refined theory of the infinite that remains close to the phenomena of the natural infinite. A strict finitistic reconstruction of the above mentioned examples is realized e.g. by fuzzy set theory or by Vopénka's alternative set theory. Still another approach is given by Parikh. WebJan 28, 2024 · Crispin Wright in his 1982 paper argues for strict finitism, a constructive standpoint that is more restrictive than intuitionism. In its appendix, he proposes models of strict finitistic arithmetic. They are tree-like structures, formed in his strict finitistic metatheory, of equations between numerals on which concrete arithmetical sentences are …

WebSep 17, 2024 · First, I aim to enliven a debate that’s stagnated, drawing on very recent proposals concerning the nature of infinity and potential solutions to infinitary paradoxes. 2 Second, I provide new variations on the Littlewood-Ross and Thomson’s Lamp paradoxes that sidestep usual resolutions. WebIn a series of papers, Dummett claims that Wittgensteinian considerations entail strict finitism. However, by a “sorites argument”, Dummett argues that strict finitism is incoherent and therefore questions these Wittgensteinian considerations. In this paper, I will argue that Dummett’s sorites argument fails to undermine strict finitism.

WebBy describing both Theorems and drawing their meaning and scope, this dissertation claims that, although tracing inherent limits to formalization outcomes in logic-mathematics, they nevertheless offered the key to understand Mathematics' unique creative nature and ceaselessly evolutive path within its strict logical and methodological foundations. Finitism is a philosophy of mathematics that accepts the existence only of finite mathematical objects. It is best understood in comparison to the mainstream philosophy of mathematics where infinite mathematical objects (e.g., infinite sets) are accepted as legitimate.
